linux.conf.au 2011¶
Join us at linux.conf.au 2011 in Brisbane, 24-29 January 2011. Present throughout the conference will be Sridhar Dhanapalan, Technical Manager at OLPC Australia.
Sridhar is available throughout the conference to answer your questions, but please first attend the talk and BoF (see below). Otherwise, you can e-mail him.
Read our Participation page for ways to contribute to the OLPC Australia mission.
Talk¶
Sridhar is speaking on Thursday at 14:30 in room L101. In his presentation, Enabling Connections to Opportunity: OLPC Australia, he will cover OLPC Australia's mission and experiences from a technical perspective. It will also discuss ways for you to get involved in the technical development community.
Update: the video of the talk is online.
Birds of a Feather (BoF) session¶
An informal discussion for anyone interested in OLPC, particularly in Australia. Keep an eye on the conference BoF page for updates.
- Venue: Room N-517
- Time: Friday 12:30-13:30
- overview of OLPC Australia's XO-AU builds
- Sugar user interface introduction
- flashing/NANDblaster session
- XO transfer of ownership (see below)
For best results and to avoid duplication, please watch Sridhar's talk first.
This is a participatory exercise, so your assistance is welcome
Open Day¶
We will have a stand at Open Day. The stand will have information sheets to give away, as well as the latest XO-1.5 models on display.
We are looking for community members to assist. Please contact Sridhar if you would like to help.
XOs on display¶
The conference organisers have been kind enough to arrange for 20 XO-1s, loaded with the latest software to be present. We'll be trying to set them up for delegates to play with during the conferences. They will also be available for use during Open Day.
Win an XO-1.5!¶
There will be opportunities to win an XO-1.5. These models were released in May 2010 (in fact, we conducted the world's first deployment), and represent a significant improvement over the XO-1 models that you may be used to.
One XO-1.5 will be awarded before each of the keynotes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Simply be in the room in the morning to be in the running.
In addition, an XO-1.5 will be won at the Hackfest, and another at the Photo Competition.
If you are lucky enough to win one but do not feel that you can participate actively in the OLPC Australia cause, please consider passing it onto someone who can.
How can I prepare?¶
Read our Participation page.

Bring your XO-1s!¶
Many XO-1s were given away at previous LCAs. If you happen to have one, you can update it into a developer machine compatible with our latest releases by upgrading the software.
Bring your XO-1 along! Carry it around the conference, and show that you support OLPC. Bring it to the BoF so that you can share experiences with other XO hackers.
If you aren't doing much development or testing with your XO, please consider passing it to another person who is interested in actively participating in our cause. The BoF is the best place to be passing on XOs.
