XO-AU OS

The XO-AU OS is OLPC Australia's variant of the OLPC OS. We make changes to make it more specific to the Australian educational context.

Features

The XO-AU OS is based on OLPC OS, so we inherit their features and fixes. Above and beyond that, we have implemented our own changes to better suit the Australian educational context. Here is a shortlist:

  • works with our XO-AU USB project to make XOs easier to manage
  • compatible with our online course and training
  • better support and easier configuration for the complex networks found in Australian schools
  • localisation
    • Australian English language, locale and dictionaries
    • metric units of measurement
    • time zone set to Darwin by default (can be modified for other states)
    • Received Pronunciation voice for Speak and other TTS activities
  • custom set of activities for Australian educational environments
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • USB2VGA adapter support, for use with projectors and interactive whiteboards
  • improved consistency of settings and user experience between Sugar and GNOME
    • proper time accuracy and display
    • take pictures with the camera, screenshots and screencasts
    • OLPC Library page is set as the home page in Firefox as well as in Browse
  • SMB browsing in GNOME
  • printing in GNOME
  • GUI and system improvements to allow easier installation of Fedora Linux packages
  • power management (powerd) fixes for trouble-free project:XOP use
  • our own bug fixes
  • system updates
  • new firmware
  • updates servers configured, allowing updates over the Internet on school networks
